Ample's cute 'Eo' EV is the world's first e-quadrimotorcycle, we hope not the last

While EVs come in all shapes and sizes, one thing seems to remain constant — a witty electricity pun. This time up its Ample, and its “Eo” e-quadrimotorcycle. A quadri-ma-whatcycle? Basically, a light, low-powered four-wheeled electric vehicle. The Eo’s 40 miles per hour top speed might not be teeth-rattlingly fast, but it means it can eke out 124 miles on a single charge. Essentially, it’s a single seated vehicle, but there are two fold-out chairs in the back if you want to make things even more cosy, while other gizmos on board include backward-facing cameras that pipe into a screen on the dash, replacing the need for mirrors. The Eo was on display at EVS26 in California, but no word on if, or when, we can expect to see this cutting us up on the school run.

Doug CrawfordThe reorganizing and downsizing at Yahoo — and possibly the executive scandal at the very top of the pyramid — are leading to a wave of talent departures at the company: the latest in that story is that Douglas Crockford, a trailblazing Java guru most recently at Yahoo, is joining eBay’s payment giant PayPal. The news was announced by Bill Scott, PayPal’s senior director of?UI engineering, on his own blog, yesterday. Scott himself had also worked at Yahoo years ago.

A huge sunspot spanning more than 60,000 miles could erupt, sending high energy radiation into space.

An enormous sunspot group has taken shape on the surface of the sun, hinting that our star may soon start spouting off some powerful storms.

The huge sunspot complex, known as AR 1476, rotated into Earth’s view over the weekend. It measures more than 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) across, researchers said. Scientists with NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory mission, a space-based telescope watching the sun, dubbed the solar structure a “monster sunspot” in a Twitter announcement.

AR 1476 is big enough for amateur astronomers with decent equipment to spot from their backyards, weather permitting. (Warning:?Never look at the sun directly with telescopes or the unaided eye. Special filters are required for safe solar viewing to avoid serious eye damage.)?

“With at least four dark cores larger than Earth, AR 1476 sprawls more than 100,000 km from end to end, and makes an easy target for backyard solar telescopes,” the website Spaceweather.com reported Monday (May 7).

Sunspots are temporary dark patches on the surface of the sun that are caused by intense magnetic activity. These structures sometimes erupt into?solar flares, which send high-energy radiation streaming into space.

Solar physicists classify flares into three main categories: C, M and X, with C being the least powerful and X the strongest. X-class flares can cause long-lasting radiation storms in Earth’s upper atmosphere and trigger radio blackouts. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts in the polar regions and occasional minor radiation storms, while C flares have few noticeable consequences.

AR 1476 has already proven quite active, firing off a number of C flares?over the past few days. And another sunspot group, AR 1471, erupted Monday evening with one that seems?to be an M1, one of the least powerful M flares, according to Spaceweather.com.

Big solar flares are often associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive clouds of solar plasma that streak through space at 3 million mph (5 million kph) or more.?If these clouds hit Earth, they can wreak havoc, spawning geomagnetic storms that can disrupt GPS signals, radio communications and power grids. CMEs also often super-charge the northern and southern lights, providing dazzling shows for skywatchers at high latitudes.

Monday evening’s eruption from AR 1471 apparently generated an Earth-directed CME, which should hit Earth sometime Wednesday morning (May 9) Eastern time, researchers said.?

After remaining surprisingly quiet from 2005 through 2010, our star began waking up last year, spouting off numerous powerful flares and CMEs.

Most experts expect such outbursts to continue over the next year or so. Solar activity waxes and wanes on an 11-year cycle, and scientists think the current one ? known as Solar Cycle 24 ? will peak in 2013.

HTC is on a roll in the US, first releasing the One S for T-Mobile and the One X for AT&T. Now, with the EVO 4G LTE on Sprint, it’s ready to shift to the CDMA realm in a different costume. Internally, it’s incredibly close to what’s offered in the One series’ flagship, but the Now Network has made a few tweaks to the device so it’ll adjust to life as the latest smartphone in the fabled EVO lineup. This time it’s packing a powerful processor, gorgeous display and the ability to connect to the still-dormant LTE. It’s eager to show its face in retail stores beginning May 18th for $200, placing it in the high end of Sprint’s selection.

This review, however, is just a bit different from any we’ve done before. How so? To our knowledge, we’ve never done one in New Orleans before. But when a phone gets dropped in our lap at CTIA 2012, we’re naturally going to put it through its paces, regardless of location. As it shares so many commonalities with its One brethren, we’ve been expecting a very similar fit, feel and performance. In our review, we’ll take you through what’s different and what’s better or worse. Is this the best device to grace the hands of Sprint customers? Follow us past the break to find out.

(AP) ? Just how unpopular is President Barack Obama in some parts of the country? Enough that a man in prison in Texas got 4 out of 10 votes in West Virginia’s Democratic presidential primary.

The inmate, Keith Judd, is serving time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana, Texas, for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. Obama received 59 percent of the vote to Judd’s 41 percent.

For some West Virginia Democrats, simply running against Obama is enough to get Judd votes.

“I voted against Obama,” said Ronnie Brown, a 43-year-old electrician from Cross Lanes who called himself a conservative Democrat. “I don’t like him. He didn’t carry the state before and I’m not going to let him carry it again.”

When asked which presidential candidate he voted for, Brown said, “That guy out of Texas.”

Judd got on the state ballot by paying a $2,500 fee and filing a form known as a notarized certification of announcement, said Jake Glance, a spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office.

Attracting at least 15 percent of the vote would normally qualify a candidate for a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. But state Democratic Party Executive Director Derek Scarbro said no one has filed to be a delegate for Judd. The state party also believes that Judd has failed to file paperwork required of presidential candidates, but officials continue to research the matter, Scarbro said.

Voters in other conservative states showed their displeasure with Obama in Democratic primaries last March.

In Oklahoma, anti-abortion protester Randall Terry got 18 percent of the primary vote. A lawyer from Tennessee, John Wolfe, pulled nearly 18,000 votes in the Louisiana primary. In Alabama, 18 percent of Democratic voters chose “uncommitted” in the primary rather than vote for Obama.

Obama’s energy policies and the Environmental Protection Agency’s handling of mining-related permits have incurred the wrath of West Virginia’s coal industry. With the state the nation’s second-biggest producer of this fossil fuel, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin and Sen. Joe Manchin ?both Democrats have championed the industry ? have declined to say whether they will support Obama in November. Each overcame low-profile opponents in Tuesday’s primary. Manchin refused afterward to say whether he voted for Obama.

Hillary Rodham Clinton beat Obama handily in the state’s 2008 primary, and he lost the state to Republican John McCain in the general election. The latest state-by-state Gallup poll, released in January, found Obama with a 32.7 percent approval rating in West Virginia. The president had a lower approval rating only in Utah, Idaho, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

“Keith Judd’s performance is embarrassing for Obama and our great state,” outgoing West Virginia GOP Chairman Mike Stuart said.

Presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won West Virginia’s GOP primary Tuesday with more than 69 percent of the vote, with 93 percent of precincts reporting. Rick Santorum followed with 12 percent, while Ron Paul had 11 percent.

Brown, the Cross Lanes electrician, did not know of Judd’s background when he voted. He went to the polls before his 22-year-old daughter, Emily. She planned to vote for Judd, too, until she found out where he has been living.

“I’m not voting for somebody who’s in prison,” she said.

She was certain about one thing: “I just want to vote against Barack Obama.”

Federal transportation officials found gun components and ammunition hidden inside three stuffed animals carried by a passenger at Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport. WHDH-TV’s Victoria Warren reports.

Story updated at 12:45 p.m. ET – Gun components and ammunition were found?hidden inside three stuffed animals carried by a passenger at Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport on Tuesday, federal transportation officials said.

Authorities later allowed the 4-year-old boy and his father to continue their travel to Detroit after concluding the man didn’t pose a risk, authorities said. The man, who’s identity has not been released, told police that he didn’t know the parts were inside the stuffed toys — which included a?Mickey Mouse and a teddy bear.

“After extensively interviewing the father and conducting the follow-up investigation, it was determined that this case involved a domestic custody dispute, and there was no threat to aviation safety,” Patty Goldstein, spokesperson for?Rhode Island Airport Corporation, said in a statement obtained by msnbc.com.

The case is being investigated by the Rhode Island Airport Police, FBI and Rhode Island State Police, the statement said.?

NBC News station WHDH reported?that a magazine loaded with two .40-caliber rounds was discovered?inside a bunny and a firing pin was inside Mickey Mouse.

A?TSA officer noticed the disassembled gun components “artfully concealed” inside three stuffed animals. The stuffed animals were inside the child’s carry-on bag, which had been put through an X-ray machine as part of normal security screening.

This photo provided by the Transportation Security Administration shows pistol parts hidden in a stuffed animal found at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, R.I.

The parts could have been assembled to make a full firearm, authorities said.

The items were confiscated.?

Passengers at T.F. Green had mixed reactions, WHDH reported.

?I just can?t imagine anybody letting him continue on his trip without getting answers to the questions: What was he thinking? Why was he doing that? And for the officials to sit back and say, ?Could he have posed a danger?? And if he could, why are we letting him move on to potentially do it again?? one man said.

Another traveler said security measures are clearly working.

“I know a lot of people don’t like the screening procedure, but I’m thankful that they really screen people and we feel much safer because of it,” the woman told WHDH.

The great Pacific garbage patch has created a new breeding ground for a marine insect, which in turn is changing Pacific ecosystems.?

The great Pacific garbage patch is giving sea striders a place to breed out on the open ocean, changing the natural environment there, new research suggests.

Skip to next paragraph The average American throws away three and a half pounds of trash each day. You may be surprised that some of that is ending up in the ocean, with much going to what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. At twice the size of Texas, one woman has made cleaning this vast space her mission.

The great Pacific garbage patch, known to scientists as the?North Pacific Subtropial Gyre, is a large patch of mulched up plastic and other garbage, often said to be the size of Texas, floating in the Pacific Ocean.

“This paper shows a dramatic increase in plastic over a relatively short time period and the effect it’s having on a common North Pacific Gyre invertebrate,” study researcher Miriam Goldstein, graduate student at the University of California San Diego, said in a statement. “We’re seeing changes in this marine insect that can be directly attributed to the plastic.”

The sea strider,?Halobates sericeus, is related to?pond striders?seen in freshwater lakes. It usually lays its eggs on floating objects in the ocean, like seashells, seabird feathers, tar lumps and pumice. The researchers compared recently collected plastic to that collected in 1972 under a microscope.

They found that the number of pieces of plastic less than 0.2 inches (5 millimeters) in diameter increased about 100 times over the past 40 years. They also found that these tiny plastic pieces gave sea striders more room to lay their eggs, leading to much higher densities of the invertebrate in?the garbage patch.

By giving these insects a place to breed out on the open ocean, the plastic patch is changing the natural environment and could be having an impact on the local food web, the researchers said. This is exactly what they’ve been worried about, Goldstein said. [Video: Humans Hit the Oceans Hard]

“It’s a general pattern throughout the ocean that the animals that live on hard surfaces are different than the animals that live on soft surfaces, or in the water column. All this plastic has added a lot of hard surfaces to an ecosystem that historically has very few,” Goldstein told LiveScience in an email.

This could be a “good” thing for the insect’s main predator, crabs, increasing their numbers ? but such a large change could?disrupt the oceanic food web, the researchers said. And the items that the insect eats, including tiny animals like zooplankton and fish eggs, could take a big population hit.

The garbage patch community seems to have a very low amount of biodiversity, Goldstein said, which isn’t a great thing: “We’re concerned that this might change the flow of energy in this ecosystem, potentially favoring the low-biodiversity rafting community at the expense of the high-biodiversity water column community.”

The study will be published May 9 in the journal Biology Letters.
